John Krich, a journalist, was in Taiwan to research the story of CK Yang ( 楊傳廣), a decathlete from Taitung who won the first Olympic medal for Taiwan in 1960 Rome Olympics. He managed to squeeze in a day trip to Taitung, and I tagged along on this discovery journey of this legendary sportsman. All these time in Taitung, I knew the street that’s name after him without knowing anything about him.

He is known as the first Chinese person to win an Olympic medal and he is not even Chinese. He is of Amis tribe.

Found the house that the government built for him after his olympic win in 1960. The house in dilapidated condition, the shuttered temple he built next door, all suggested a past glory long forgotten.

Through Lily, the Lukai tribe translator, we were able to talk to some relatives and  elders who know him. The previous chief of Dulan, Panai, told many interesting stories about CK from his school days.
