P & I were invited (to make up the number I believe) to a special dinner prepared by Yao Zhong (a brilliant chef from Amis tribe) for some important guests from Taipei. The elders from the buluo were invited to perform their traditional singing for us. I’m ambivalent about such experience. On the one hand, the more opportunity these elders have of showcasing their culture, the better it can be preserved. However, I always feel that such experience is somehow inauthentic. One should have the privilege to experience such a thing in its natural setting, rather than having these elders “perform” for us.
